Osteoporosis has been named the "silent epidemic". It is a potentially crippling disease characterized by the loss of bone tissue leading to an increased risk for bone fractures. It is also the main cause of the stooped appearance of the elderly. It is called the silent epidemic because it does not cause any symptoms until a bone fracture actually occurs. Approximately 50% of women over the age of 50 are at risk for bone fracture caused by osteoporosis.

Certain risk factors increase the chance for developing osteoporosis:

•Fair skin
•Thin or small frame
•Menopause
•Low calcium intake
•Cigarette smoking

•Excess alcohol intake
•Thyroid medications & steroids
•Family history of osteoporosis
•Chronic intestinal disorder
•Sedentary life style

Early detection of osteoporosis is important in reducing the risk for fracture. Bone Densitometry uses X-ray waves to safely, accurately, and painlessly measure bone density. This testing is discussed further on this web site at Bone Density Testing.

There are many preventative and treatment measures for osteoporosis. These include calcium and vitamin D supplements, regular weight bearing exercise, and avoidance of tobacco use and alcohol abuse. There are also several medications available for treatment of osteoporosis.

We will be happy to help assess your risk for osteoporosis, as well as outline a plan with you to reduce your risk or treat your bone loss.
