Prenatal Ultrasound

Ultrasound, which creates pictures of the internal organs from sound waves, can be found today in many doctors' offices, including Garrison Women's Health Center. This technology is especially valuable during pregnancy and childbirth.

Ultrasound can provide valuable information about the fetus' health and well-being including:

•Age of fetus
•Rate of growth of fetus
•Position of the placenta

•Amount of amniotic fluid
•Number of fetus'
•Some birth defects
•Fetal position, movement, breathing, and heart rate

Ultrasound is not necessary for every woman or in every pregnancy. We do offer an ultrasound on patients at 20-22 weeks gestation. We also discuss whether or not an ultrasound will be needed at other times to help detect a particular problem or check a known condition.

Ultrasound can be used to monitor the fetal heart rate before and during labor. The fetal heart rate can indicate the well-being of the baby. It can also used during pregnancy to find the casue of bleeding or pain. A tubal pregnancy can be diagnosed by ultrasound. It is certainly a diagnostic tool that gives information other tests do not.
